Challenging the broader world of hardware security

IC System Security - Round Table (ICSS-RT) was established on March 18, 2009. ICSS-RT was initially established as a forum to discuss the security assurance of IC systems, including transportation and financial systems, with a focus on Smart Cards security technology, among various players such as application system users, card and semiconductor chip manufacturers, security evaluation organizations, security certification bodies, and research institutes in different positions.

The CC Evaluation and Certification Subcommittee (IC System Security Japan Consortium : ICSS-JC), which was established within ICSS-RT, has been playing a central role in Japan in applying ISO/IEC 15408-based security evaluation and certification to Smart Cards and semiconductor chips, Since its establishment, ICSS-JC has held about 100 regular meeting and SWGs, leading the security assurance technology in this field, and has been exchanging with overseas counterparts.

Recently, the concept of “IC systems” has begun to expand from the field of Smart Cards applications to the world of semiconductor chips implemented in so-called embedded devices and the broader range of applications that these chips provide. Automatic driving, robots, industrial control equipment, medical devices, and various sensor systems are emerging as new application areas. In particular, the spread of the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI has led to a demand for minimum security implementation in lightweight, simple devices at the edge, while at the same time requiring security measures using stronger cryptographic techniques, such as quantum cryptography, in the field of servers and the like on the upper side. At the same time, on the other hand, security measures using stronger cryptographic techniques, such as quantum cryptography, are required for higher-level servers.

We understand these changes of the times, and based on the Smart Cards security technology we have cultivated up to now, we would like to challenge the world of hardware security more broadly, and contribute to the safety and security of society as a whole. We look forward to meeting new friends who will discuss IC system security with us.
